FAQ

How does ESOS pay for things?

ESOS rings make contactless payments by tapping or hovering over a payment terminal. Once your ring is activated, simply hover or tap any payment terminal that allows contactless purchases – they generally have this symbol on the payment terminal:

What happens if my ESOS is lost or stolen?

If lost or stolen, simply open the ESOS app, select “Disable” and the ring will be turned off for payments. ESOS Ring also has 24/7 telephone customer service line and our team can disable your device.

Esos Ring is a US company that manufactured payment enabled rings. It was started in 2016 by 3 individuals: Joseph Prencipe, Rex Scates and Shelly Silverstein.

Mr. Prencipe was Mr. Scates' attorney. Prencipe sold a patent assignment for a ring to Mr. Scates in early 2016. Mr. Prencipe then re-sold that patent to someone else without Mr. Scates knowledge in October, 2016. After selling the patent assignment, Mr. Prencipe then created the foundational corporate documents for Esos, which included assigning the same patent family he had already sold. With the patent transfer unknown to Mr. Scates and Ms. Silverstein, they moved forward to establish Esos with Mr. Prencipe, thinking their family of patents was safely assigned to the new entity and its holding company, as the US Patent Office recordings were appropriate at that time. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Prencipe's behavior became erratic. He demanded large sums of money and a no-show job. Scates and Silverstein removed him from the Board in late 2016. Scates and Silverstein sued him, as he made every effort to destroy Esos business prospects. The litigation took 5 years. During that time, Mr. Scates recorded testimony implicating Mr. Prencipe in a plan to physically harm Ms. Silverstein and she obtained a restraining order; men came to her home with the intent to harm her - twice. During the litigation, it became apparent to Mr. Scates and Ms. Silverstein that large amounts of data were destroyed by Mr. Prencipe, making defense of the company difficult. The Judge did not sanction Mr. Prencipe for any data that was destroyed or missing. The Judge also refused Esos' request for a jury trial. Therefore, the Judge, a colleague of the name partner of Prencipe's defense counsel, decided the case alone. Parts of the case are still up for appeal. Prencipe has since testified under oath in a separate Federal case that he was significantly under the influence of drugs during the time he worked with Mr. Scates and Ms. Silverstein, which continued during the time he testified during the Esos trial, as well. However, the Los Angeles District Attorney's office has indicated that perjury in a civil trial is not something they enforce, with the last case being during the OJ Simpson trial.

Mr. Scates subsequently sued Mr. Prencipe as an individual. He was found to have defrauded Mr. Scates of his patent and to have violated multiple legal ethics laws. The State Bar investigated Mr. Prencipe, who received no punishment for the ethical violations specified by the Judge. Subsequent to Esos losing its trial in 2022, additional legal issues arose and will be outlined. Mr. Scates still owns his original designs for payment enabled products and he and Ms. Silverstein moved forward to establish another venture outside the USA which does not focus on rings, patent issues are not involved and has no relation to Esos.
